Alberta Diabetes Atlas 2009

The Alberta Diabetes Atlas provides information on the number of people living with diabetes in Alberta, their related health conditions, and the health services they use.  Cardiovascular disease, renal disease, eye disease and mental health disorders are all some of the comorbidities of diabetes that are reported on in the Alberta Diabetes Atlas. The Atlas offers health care providers and policy makers with up to date information on the scope of diabetes in Alberta and vital information necessary for program planning and development.  By reporting on the patterns of health care use over time and across the zones of Alberta, the Atlas is effective as a measurement tool on healthcare changes and healthcare outcomes.

The content in the 2009 Alberta Diabetes Atlas is an enhancement of the information that was presented in the last edition (2007). The atlas includes health care utilization costs of diabetes to the health system, as well as epidemiological trends for children and adolescents and diabetic patients with hypertension; health care utilization data for the under-20-year old population, as well as the Status Aboriginal population. Two chapters have been expanded – “Diabetes and Stroke” includes information on the different types of stroke and “Diabetes and Lower Limb Amputations” includes information on foot disease.
